GTAC still considering area
HURLEY - Gogebic Taconite is still studying core samples from Gogebic County, as well as researching mines elsewhere in the Western Upper Peninsula.

"We'd like to stay in this area," Gogebic Taconite President Bill Williams said Tuesday, praising the mining "expertise" within Michigan and Minnesota. The company has been researching other mines since shelving its proposed mine in Wisconsin's Iron and Ashland counties this spring. That project was canceled following a roughly year-long push for iron mining regulatory reform failing because of disagreements between the Wisconsin Assembly and Senate.

Prior to pursuing the Wisconsin project, Williams said GTAC collected many core samples near Wakefield in Gogebic County. The company this week is waiting for results from labs in Minnesota and Canada that can shed more light on the kind and concentration of iron ore left in the county.
