Hello Frank. Northland College does not own any mineral rights. We
have a former trustee with mineral rights who is also related to
others with rights in this area. More importantly, Northland has
played the role of being a convener and neutral site for conversations
between individuals and groups who differ in beliefs about mining.
That is a role that I hope we can continue to assume.

Subject: Penokee Hills Mineral Rights

Good Morning President Miller:

A recent article in the Ashland Daily Press (August 18, 2010) sent me
to my files to review previous interest in mining the Penokee Hills
area near Mellen, Wisconsin. I did find a reference that indicated
Northland College had a connection with mineral rights in this region.
I do not know if this is accurate and this is why I am contacting you.
Possibly the mineral rights were owned by a board member or a previous
board member rather Northland College and in this would not be
information you may have. If Northland College does own or did own
mineral rights in this region, what is the current status as to who
owns these or who purchased the rights?

I am planning a series of meetings concerning the impact of mining in
the region and currently I am trying to gather background information.

If these questions could be better answered by another member of you
administration, please let me know.

Thank you,

Frank K. Koehn
