Ashland Superfund Site

In 1999 Ashland WE publications were circulated throughout the area and presented to City Hall during Council meetings. The concern that City Hall and Xcel Energy were not aggressively seeking ways to clean up the coal tar deposited years ago by Lake Superior District Power (subsequently bought up by Excel Energy) led to the successful request to EPA for a site review which ultimately made the site, a Superfund clean up site. Area residents participated in parades, pickets, public hearings, and many other activities. During this time many helped produce, publish, and distribute the Water’s Edge.  Copies of WE were distributed at the 1999 Rendezvous, the Bad River Pow-wow, and at participating commercial locations. At present the clean up is still in progress.

Copies of WE publications are available for review.
